BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROTARACT CLUB

Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in March 13,1968. Rotaract,
Rotary International’s service club program for young adults ages 18-30, was officially
inaugurated during January 1968 under RI President Luther Hodges. On 13 March 1968, the
Rotaract Club of the University of North Carolina, sponsored by the Rotary Club of North
Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, was the first Rotaract club to receive its official charter.
Rotaract focuses on the development of young adults as leaders in their communities and
workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects, in a global
effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world.
“Rotaract” stands for “Rotary in Action”, although the name originally comes from a combination
of “Rotary” and “Interact” which stands for “International + Action”, the high school level program
created by Rotary International in 1962.
