HISTORY OF THE FATHER OF ROTARY

Paul P. Harris the founder of Rotary was born at Ricine, Wisconsin, U.S.A. on April 19, 1868
When he was three years' old, he was taken to Willingford, Vermont, to live with his paternal
grandparents. The second of six children, his parents were George N. Harris and Cornelis
Bryan Harris. Married to Jean Thompson Harris (1881-1963), he had no children.

Our 1.2-million-member organization started with the vision of one man -
Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service
organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place
where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and
form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s
early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

HISTORY OF THE ROTARY IN NIGERIA

Rotary found its way into Nigeria in 1961 when the first Rotary club was chartered in Kano on
the 28th April 1961 in the 56th year of Rotary.
Before then the first Rotary club in Africa had been established in 1921, 40 years ahead of
Nigeria while the first Rotary club in West Africa was also established in Dakar, Senegal in 1939
about 22 years before Nigeria. Nigeria indeed was the 32nd nation to receive Rotary in Africa.

HISTORY OF THE ROTARACT CLUB UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

The Rotaract club of University of Benin was introduced into Uniben around 1982/83 by the
Rotary club of Benin. The club had her first President in the person of Hakim Akilade. The
following rotary year, Andrew Agien who served as club President would witness the charter
Presentation of the club and thus becoming the Charter President of the club. Even though
Andrew Agien was the Charter President, he is recognized and seen as the second President of the club.
